US Calcium, Vitamin D3 and Magnesium: Comparing Popular Picks
In this article (8)

Shopping for US calcium and vitamin D3? You will see three kinds of products: calcium with D3 (Caltrate 600+D3, Citracal Maximum Plus, Nature Made Calcium Magnesium Zinc with D3), vitamin D3 on its own (Kirkland 50 mcg, Nature's Bounty 125 mcg) and magnesium on its own (Nature Made 400 mg, Nature's Bounty Magnesium Glycinate, Sports Research Magtein). The right choice depends on what a doctor recommends, the form that suits the person, how many pills a day they will take and what they already use. This guide explains the forms in plain terms, compares eight products from the TCS Global store and covers shipping to Vietnam.

Why calcium, vitamin D3 and magnesium go together

The manufacturers' own descriptions explain the pairing: Kirkland says vitamin D3 helps improve calcium absorption, Nature Made says magnesium works alongside calcium for bones and teeth, and Caltrate puts all three in one tablet. That does not mean everyone needs all three, or needs high amounts. A doctor, sometimes with a blood test, is the right person to decide.

Calcium carbonate vs calcium citrate

  • Calcium carbonate carries more elemental calcium per gram. General nutrition references often mention taking it with food.
  • Calcium citrate carries less elemental calcium per gram, so the same amount of calcium usually means a bigger tablet or more tablets. It is often described as more flexible about timing.

Only Citracal Maximum Plus names its form (calcium citrate) in the product name. The Caltrate and Nature Made descriptions do not, so look for "Calcium (as ...)" on the Supplement Facts panel. Either way, follow the label and your doctor on how and when to take it.

Nature's Bounty D3 125 mcg125 mcg5,000 IULiquid softgels, 400 countNon-GMO, gluten-free, USP Verified

Unit tip: 1 mcg of vitamin D equals 40 IU. Caltrate's 800 IU is 20 mcg, while Nature's Bounty's 125 mcg is 5,000 IU, far more than the combination tablets. The higher the strength, the more important a doctor's sign-off, and do not stack several vitamin D products on your own.

Magnesium oxide, glycinate and L-threonate

ProductFormStated amountNotes
Nature Made Extra Strength MagnesiumNot stated in description; check label400 mgSoftgels, 180 count
Nature's Bounty Magnesium GlycinateGlycinate240 mg per 2-capsule servingNo soy, gluten, lactose or fish; non-GMO; vegetarian
Sports Research MagteinL-threonate2000 mg Magtein across 3 capsules a dayVeggie capsules; certified vegan, gluten-free, non-GMO

Magnesium oxide is a very common form in supplements; to see which form the Nature Made bottle uses, read the "Magnesium (as ...)" line. Glycinate is magnesium bound to the amino acid glycine. L-threonate is magnesium bound to L-threonate, and Magtein is a trademarked ingredient name. Note that a big front-label number can be the weight of the whole compound rather than elemental magnesium; "2000 mg Magnesium L-Threonate" is the compound. Compare the "Magnesium" line on the Supplement Facts panel instead. If one form has bothered someone's stomach, ask a pharmacist about alternatives rather than adjusting the dose.

Who usually picks what

  • Calcium, D3 and minerals in one tablet: Caltrate.
  • Doctor suggested the citrate form: Citracal Maximum Plus.
  • Calcium, magnesium, zinc and D3 together: Nature Made Calcium Magnesium Zinc.
  • Vitamin D only, per the doctor: Kirkland D3 50 mcg.
  • High-strength D3 prescribed by a doctor: Nature's Bounty 125 mcg, not for self-selection.
  • Vegetarian or avoiding soy, gluten or lactose: Nature's Bounty Glycinate; vegans may also look at Magtein.

Check for overlap: One A Day Women's 50+ already contains calcium and vitamin D, the men's 50+ version contains magnesium and vitamin D, and Nature's Way Joint Movement liquid has 10 mcg of D3 per serving. List every bottle and let the doctor review the totals.

Shipping calcium and vitamins to Vietnam

Calcium tablets tend to be large because each holds hundreds of milligrams of calcium, and every bottle here is a big count (280 to 600). A few bottles can make a box heavier than expected, and shipping is priced by weight and province, so read how US-to-Vietnam shipping is calculated or use the free estimator on our Ship to Vietnam page. Keep bottles sealed, store softgels somewhere cool and dry before packing, and ask TCS before sending large quantities. Every package has its own tracking number for the tracking tool. For Tết, Lunar New Year's Day is Saturday, February 6, 2027, so ship by early-to-mid January. The full process is in our complete shipping guide, and you can browse current prices in the TCS Global store.

Frequently asked questions

Is calcium carbonate or citrate better?

Neither is better for everyone. They differ in salt form and elemental calcium content; let a doctor or pharmacist guide the choice.

Is 125 mcg of vitamin D3 a lot?

It equals 5,000 IU, much more than the D3 in the combination calcium tablets above. Use it only if a doctor recommends that level.

How long does shipping to Vietnam take?

TCS flies Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Estimated delivery is 5–10 days to Ho Chi Minh City and 10–14 days to other provinces, and can vary.
